Seeing Spots

March 1, 2021 The ArtPopStreetGallery project continues to be an exciting opportunity for Atlanta artists and I was thrilled when given the opportunity to exhibit a second photograph on Atlanta billboards. It’s quite a creative exercise to reinterpret art for the extreme aspect ratio of a billboard, but surprising things happen when you take bold strokes.

I revisited an image from a 2016 safari in Kenya, discovering a leopard captured in blistering detail with an exceptional Nikon telephoto lens, the 800mm f5.6. The sharpness was astonishing and lent itself well to the extreme billboard crop. While the natural surroundings in which the leopard was found were removed, the result was a visually stunning abstract of spots and face with glowing eyes. The digital billboard below, found on Jimmy Carter Blvd in Norcross, GA, reveals the cat in its full splendor. As the artist I can’t tell you how exciting (and a little surreal) it is to see your work high in the sky.
